The Angel In My Eye
The Story Of Nikki Marshall
"The Angel In My Eye" is an inspirational story about my daughter Nikki's journey through life as she overcame devastating birth defects. Nikki's story is about love, hope, faith and the many miracles that God performed throughout her life. Nikki's defects included, Holoprosencephaly and Multiple Congenital Anomalies. One doctor's explaination was when Nikki's birth mother was early into her pregnancy something happened to stop Nikki's development leaving her with a brain of a thirteen week fetus.
Nikki was two weeks old when Dr. Willian Bell, a neurosurgeon at North Carolina University Baptist Hospital placed a shunt into Nikki's head to drain the spinal fluid. Nikki was five months old when she had another surgery to reconstruct her skull with Dr. Bell and Dr. Louis Argenta, a plastic and reconstructive surgeon. Dr. Argenta worked magic on Nikki. He did several major surgeries on her before she was one year old.
Dr. Argenta once told Nikki she would never know just how famous she was and how many people she had inspired. Dr. Argenta also voluntarily went to third world countries to operate on children with facial defects similar to Nikki. He carried a briefcase with more than three hundred of Nikki's before and after surgery pictures. Dr. Argenta told me the parents of these children were inspired and overjoyed to see Nikki's results.
I feel blessed and honored to be Nikki's mother. She has come so far and has accomplished so much. I wanted to share Nikki's story with everyone. With alot of help from a friend, Faith Lockwood, I have written and self-published a book, ''The Angel In My Eye,'' about Nikki's remarkable life. The money from the sale of this book will go into a trust fund I have established for Nikki.
Through the years, Nikki has endured more than sixty surgeries. It's been a long and challenging journey for Nikki but she never gave up. Because of her courage and her strong will to live Nikki has grown into a happy beautiful young lady!
